Science

Judy Willis
The summer of 1999 marks my twenty-fifth year as an elementary school teacher. I currently teach fifth grade at a small elementary school located in central Louisiana. I was chosen Elementary Teacher of the Year for my parish in 1996. My interest and enthusiasm for the subject of science is one of those "happy accidents" which we experience from time to time in education. Gradually over the years I have incorporated a growing list of "hands-on" activities into my teaching in both science and math. Science has proven to be a valuable vehicle with which to engage children's natural curiosity for learning across the curriculum. In the early 70's my husband and I chose to return to my hometown in Louisiana after living in Tennessee for five years. Our three children are now attending a nearby university. Due to a recent family tragedy, I am currently working with my sister to develop and implement a family violence educational campaign for the state of Louisiana.

Social Studies

Kelley Tijero
For the past eight years, I have enjoyed teaching multi-level, diverse, and at-risk sixth graders. Social studies is the subject I absolutely love! In addition, I have taught language arts and science. Teaching summer school to lower elementary through intermediate level students has been my greatest challenge as an educator. I consider incorporating technology in my lessons important, and I frequently use the Internet to locate teaching resources. When I am not teaching or net-surfing, I like to read, take walks in the southeast Texas sunshine, and play cards with my husband, who is an elementary school teacher. Currently, I am on leave from my teaching position to care for my family.

Teaching Practices

Sarah Wood
I grew up in California, but have lived Texas for the past 20 years. My husband and I have 3 children. I have been teaching 2nd grade for the past 9 years. I got a late start on the teaching career, going back to school to get certified after my oldest 2 were in school. During the '99-2000 school year I will be out of the classroom and will instead be in charge of technology for my district. We have numerous computers, networked across the district and a new "TV station set-up." It will be a challenge, but one I am looking forward to. When not involved with school I enjoy my computer, cooking, reading and driving around listening to country music. See my web page.
